3 July 05: Motor is back from Evolution engines.  When the heads were pulled, it was determined both rear sleeves had recessed into the bore.  One had dropped 1.5 thousandths and the other maybe .5.  This was the reason my head gasket failed.  Never accept the fact that a head gasket failed but determine why it failed.  There's usually a reason besides defective gasket.  Nevertheless we don't know why it did this and it's the second motor Evolution has built which has done this. Only time will tell and I hope it doesn't happen again considering the amount of money in this motor.

While the motor is out I am doing some touch up work.  Played around with polishing the three fins on each cylinder.

The top bar was hand sanded with 400 then finished out with 1200.  Then a dremmell was used with wenol
and finished with a hand rub.  The second bar was done the same 400, 1200 then finished with 1500, dremmell
and hand rub.  The bottom bar the same 400, 1200, 1500 then 2000, dremmell then hand rub.  After comparing
the three I could see no discernable difference in quality.  No point in wasting time/effort on extra sandpaper if
it doesn't make a difference.

Swingarm is getting new powdercoat next week.  Above are two pics, left showing the scotchbrighted surface in preps for the new coat.
The right pic shows the removal of the factory rear caliper brace so it can no longer hit the bottom of my fuel tank.  Now that I am running the
underslung Fz1 setup this brace is no longer needed.

The races look pretty rough so time to replace.  Custom made race puller.

4 July 05: Heck of a way to spend your 4th but all depends on how bad you wanna ride I suppose..  Motor is in frame but I can't do much
else until swingarm and a few other pieces are powdercoated.

Bored? Get out some sandpaper, wenol and a dremmel tool.

15 July 05: The powdercoating didn't turn out so well.. What can I say it was a freebie.  So, I decided to spray it myself with rubberized
undercoating then paint over that with gloss protective enamel.  It won't look near as good as powdercoat but no one really pays that much
attention to it anyway.  Hopefully will get it back on sometime tomorrow.

16 July 05: Bike is back together.. all that is left is to bleed the clutch but it's still too wet here to ride.

Custom Fz1 bracket needs clearancing..

18 July 05: Needed to illuminate my tag for sometime now.  Just been lucky with the cops I guess.  Used to have a Radiantz tag bracket
with led bar across the top but it became damaged one day while riding so I just replaced with a plain chrome bracket.  While looking at
the Radiantz web site for some alternative I noticed these tiny little stick on led's called "roaches".  Tried one out under the rear fender
and looks promising.  For twenty bucks how could I go wrong?

My latest venture is a custom airbox from Steve Johnson racing located here in Birmingham about 15 minutes from my house.
Tim Kulungian has looked at the bike and said it could be done.  Will be nice to have a real filter instead of those highly flammable Uni's.  I've been to Steve's shop before to watch him perform dyno work on a Suzuki Vstrom.  The shop is nice, clean and those guys are fanatics about tuning.

The Airbox is complete, see photo below.  Came out nice and is easily removed for maintenance.  As predicted it lost 4hp with the filter in
but that is worth peace of mind. Turns out the bike is running very rich down low and a tad above 8 grand.  Tim is still tweaking the carbs
and says the 142 mains I have in there are too big on the upper.  The pilot jets are also too big according to the EGA readings.

Tim consumed as much surface area as possible.  I'll still need either a louvered faux tank cover or an additional path to get air in that area.

Rear view showing Tim running it through the numbers.

Probably not supposed to take pics of this one but it looks cool.

This filter would normally fit a PT Cruiser but looks pretty happy on this max.

Modified filter adapters linked to airbox by four short rubber hoses.
